Understanding how to accelerate efficiently is one of the most important skills in sim racing. After analyzing over 40 car and track combinations over the past year, I've broken down the acceleration behavior into three main groups: low downforce (Group 4), medium downforce (Group 3), and high downforce (Group 2 and above). Each group requires a slightly different approach, and your awareness of torque, gear selection, and tire type plays a critical role in how you apply power out of corners.

Group 4 - Low Downforce Cars

In Group 4, acceleration is simple and straightforward. Whether you're coming out of a slow, medium, or fast corner, you should apply power quickly and cleanly with no delay. Tire type has little impact in this group, so your main focus should be on consistency and technique.

If you're driving modified low-downforce cars, the same rules generally apply. For best results, I strongly recommend reviewing lesson on gear selection and peak torque. These fundamentals will help you understand how to get the most out of your car, no matter the downforce level.

Group 3 - Medium Downforce Cars

This is where things start to change. Acceleration behavior becomes more dependent on corner type, car grip, and tire compound.

• Slow Corners: Build up power gradually. It might feel slower than Group 4, and that’s because it is. Instant throttle can unsettle the car, so smooth application is key.

• Medium-Speed Corners: Apply mid-to-fast acceleration. It's quicker than before, especially with recent handling updates.

• Fast Corners: Accelerate aggressively with no delay. Commit early and fully.

Tire compound matters more in Group 3:

• On medium tires, the build-up from 70-80% to 100% throttle takes longer.

• On soft tires, this transition is much faster.

Track layout can influence this too, but the general rule holds: the faster the tire, the quicker the acceleration, but always match it to the corner type. A great example is Fuji Speedway, where you often need to lift slightly, wait until your steering wheel is straight, and then apply full throttle.

Some cars in this group, like the BRZ, have unique behavior. With it, you often go straight to 100% throttle and simply lift if the car starts sliding too much. It’s not typical, but it works for that model. The faster the tire, the shorter your lift time. Group 3 cars can be quirky, so it's important to understand each car's traits individually.

Group 2 and Above - High Downforce Cars

These cars require extremely precise acceleration. The margin for error shrinks, and response time becomes critical.

In Group 2, especially on tracks like Suzuka, there should be zero hesitation between coming off the brakes and going full throttle. As soon as the car is balanced and the wheel is straight enough, you go from 0 to 100% throttle instantly.

Again, tire type plays a role, but in general, throttle response is either fast or lightning fast. Delay here leads to lost time, and at this level, every tenth matters.

Final Thoughts

To wrap things up, always remember this: Torque delivery matters.

Not every car will behave the same, and some require special handling. While most cars shown in this breakdown follow the patterns I’ve outlined, there are always exceptions. Study gear selection and peak torque.
