Dirty drivers will feast this week

I had ten races there today, five on each account. Only TWO of them were okay-ish, the others all ended in disaster. In one of them I made unforced mistakes, but the other seven races were just... unbelievable, when it comes to driving standards. I'm not saying that everyone is dirty, I found a couple of nice drivers, but the majority is pushing, leaning and what-not. No one gave back a position. And lots of drivers missing their braking points. I mean, in slipstream you can't brake at your qualifying brake marker, right? So many didn't get that memo. I mean, I understand that you can't avoid everything, even when strictly applying the four rules. Even with a VERY careful and conservative driving style, you get pushed and punted etc., how can you stay there in a good mood? So many silly moves, such as three wide into the final chicane? Or trying to pass on that segment from T1 leading up to the tunnel? And when you then watch the replay, the all of a whole x-mas tree blinking, every possible assist active. I mean, I'm not a driving god, I'm using the Corvette, my qualifying time is on my account, it's not the best, but in the race I can keep up with most drivers using the new 911 (btw. I saw another Vette and a Mustang doing VERY well at Trial Mountain). And what's the point of using the meta with every assist on?

What makes me really angry is the vast amount of DR you lose, and you gain so little when you finish on P5 or P8 (when on both occasions starting on P11 and P12). Ten races, in two I gained less than 200 points, and in the other eight I lost close to 1,400. Yes, I can do the math, this is okay for eight races, but I think PD should find a way to let you keep your points when the downfall (loss of positions) was caused by other drivers. And in my first race I started from the back, finished on P9. I think I should have been awared a couple of points. Nope.

I like this track so much, but it got ruined this week...

I'm B/S rated, and I just realised I got it wrong with the DR loss. 1,400 points not in eight reaces, but in five or so, since I did five races on each account, and only one is registered here.

This is me: https://www.dg-edge.com/players/TCR_710-Cap_VR
Qualy time on the other account is a 1:53.9xx.
I wish the top players would use this car, I would like to know THEIR lap time with it.

Staying out of way is not always possible, you can't just wave by everyone.

I need to improve my qualy time, in order to start futher forward. Problem is, I REFUSE using the meta...
I was quite confident in the Audi, I will try the old 911, and the other yank tanks. Saw a Viper and a Mustang getting along nicely.

For starting at the back, I think as the week progresses, this will happen anyway... HA!

In my very first race on the other account, I started from P16, finished on P9, with no practice at all. Too bad I didn't save the replay for sharing on YT...

Providing tips is difficult, I may not be the right one for this, but I can tell you what I do. I have two main accounts, one is registered here, the other not. This other one is my "challenge account", currently using everything Corvette related. My idea was to get used to the Gr.4 and Gr.3 Vettes, so that I can feel comfortable at any track. Normally I set up custom races using my Corvette Challenge account, mimicking the daily race with the AI using the meta car, Sophy if available. Two-chili difficulty, boost set to weak (for disabling rubberbanding for the AI cars, which doesn't work if you are in the lead). By this I get a feeling for my race pace and strategy. After a couple of custom races, I switch to sport mode and do my first race starting from the back. Racing human players is obiously not the same as racing against AI or Sophy AI. After one or two races I will set a qualifying lap time, and go again.

If I feel comfortable enough, I switch to the account registered here, doing my qualy lap, then go racing. I try several cars, and this time, at the time of writing this, I was fastest with the Corvette, slightly quicker than with the Audi.

I don't mind finishing last because of my car choice or because of my lack of racing skill, but at least I want clean races, and that people don't behave like morons.

Yesterday I saw a guy on pole position falling back to P16 on purpose, then munching his way back to the front, using every elbow he had at his disposal, finishing on P3. I mean, he was quick, had very good pace, maybe an A/A+ driver in disguise, but wtf?

RH tyres means you can't overdrive the car. you can brake close to the same point as MED and SOFTS how every you have to hold the brake longer and trail brake alot. Be gentle with the throttle, ease it on don't stomp on it. controllers wont be to bad with the throttle smoothing and all the other little assists built in but you CAN NOT overdrive the car on hards. Drive laps like your going to pick up bread then isolate 0ne corner (don't start with the first ones!) isolate that corner say turn 6. try to carry speed through it and do that again and again until you can do that one corner with speed 90% of the time. now continue driving like your going to get bread all the time consentrating on the race line drive that line every lap slow and just stay on the line. Now isolate another corner and do the same again. now you have 2 corners you can do consistently with pace on the race line. continue this process for 100+ laps and then you will find were the limit of the tyres are and the car. if you just rush out every lap and try and brake hard force the car around the corner, sometime you will do ok and the others garbage and NEVER EVER learn what it was that worked. Do this first! drive 20 laps on the race line its going to feel weird but its what you have to do. then build your speed. stop this crazy AARRHHHHHH fast fast fast driving. take the time before you even think about joinig a race to lean the car the tyres and the track. you do this you will have far better control of your car you will be less flusted and relaxed and have more time to react to the kaos and recover when things go sidways. iv raced this track since Gran Turismo (NO NUMBER AT THE END) on PS1. im still leaning the finer details. best way to get fast SLOW DOWN!!!!

Woah! Chris with the wisdom dump FTW.

Let me go full on Buddha for a minute and see how it goes over; it is pointless to dwell on the past or to fret about the future because nothing exsixts apart from the present. In performance driving terms that would translate to forgetting about the mistakes we commit as soon as they happen. Literaly leaving them behind us as we speed down the track. Also not wasting our attention thinking about entire laps or even whole sector times. All we need to focus on is the immidiate issue of, say, the upcoming corner.

When I time trial I try to ignore the updates the game gives me about my lap times while I'm driving. My priority is to follow the racing line as precisely as possible and consistently hit my markers until my tires are trash. Counterintuitively, its always the laps that feel slow that end up being the fastest.

Hate to brake it to you, but morons are everywhere. Always have been, always will be. And I'm not only talking about the game either. The best thing you can do is to learn how to spot them and develop ways to deal with them.

In the game they'll generally be the selfish, overconfident, agressive type. When I come across one of those drivers on track I try to find a way to turn their own attributes against them. Or rather to get them to do it for me. I think of it as a sort of matial art, motorsport judo if you will. Don't underestimate how many drivers will chose to drive over their abilities instead of simply conceding the position to a faster driver. But here's the catch, this can only be done from behind. Thats why I never defend against that kind of driver. Once I'm behind I can start applying pressure and, for lack of a better word, bully them into making a mistake. If I can't keep up with them or make them crack them well played to them, they deserve to beat me. Bottom line is I have more confidence in my ability to avoid causing an incident with them than if the roles were reversed.

the best thing about social media/streaming are the little bits of advice i've been collecting along the way, and I know i'll be saying "drive like you're going to get bread" from now on when I get flustered, just like i have to constantly remind myself "do not engage with the group of cars in front of you" (thanks Luke)

Thanks Chris!!

I rarely defend, I try to let them pass, and if they overshoot, I switch-a-roo them. That's the theory. Very often I'm punted from behind on the racing line, not the defending line. Since I believe in the good in everyone, I guess these things are not intended, they just brake at the qualy braking point, and that's it. Not giving back the position is the real crime here, IMHO.

I'm quite good with catching back up to people after I got punted (or made an own mistake). It happened a few times that I ended up on P14 or P16, and finished on P8 or P10, but normally in the B sprint races, there's not enough race time left to gain further positions.

Now my DR got so low, that my qualy time (1:52.990 with the Audi) is good for starting from within the top 5. Let's see how this one goes... 🤔

How did you find out?
The lobbies I'm in are full of new 911s. An Audi, a Viper, a Beetle, or an old 911 here and there, but mainly the new 911.

Btw., does anyone know what "custom" slipstream means? I guess, it's neither weak nor strong, and not "real". So, in the dailies this is set to a value unknown to us? We can't replicate it for training purposes in a custom race?

Its obvious that strong is stronger than weak but do we know where real falls in relation?

As for the custom slipstream could it be tweaked on a per-car basis to balance the field as with BoP? In the real world there's a relationship between a car's coefficient of drag and the size and shape of its aerodynamic wake. In effect, the higher a car's CoD the harder it is for it to reach high speeds and the bigger the hole it punches through the air. Thats a significant disadvantage that should receive a correction to allow more cars to be competitive.

I believe "real" takes a non-linear approach, so the closer you are to the car ahead, the stronger the tow, and as the gap grows larger - the effect diminishes.

Strong gives you both a speed boost on the straight and additional grip while sitting behind the car ahead. It's essentially a tow rope. There's no penalty for being in disturbed air. You go faster AND corner better behind another car. Completely unrealistic but it makes for close racing if you don't care about the physics being accurate.

Real gives you the straight line speed boost but it's dependent on your following distance and also reduces your grip because you're in dirty air. This is why real GT3 drivers step out of the tow before a braking zone. You gain on the straight but you'd lose in the corners if you stayed in the wake.

Weak just reduces the overall slipstream effect. Less tow on the straight, less of everything. It doesn't simulate dirty air the way Real does, it just turns the whole system down.

So Real doesn't sit between Strong and Weak on a sliding scale. It's a fundamentally different model. Strong is all benefit no penalty. Real is benefit on the straight, penalty in the corners. Weak is just less of everything.

"Custom" slipstream setting in daily races has some serious concerns about it. PD has actually acknowledged in their known issues list that daily races display slipstream strength as "Disabled" when a strength IS set in the event regulations. So the game is telling you there's no slipstream active when there is. What exactly the custom setting does, how strong it is, and whether it changes week to week is not disclosed. What some people have said from testing is that it feels stronger than Real and possibly stronger than what most people would consider balanced.

There's a reason you see cars getting slingshot passes on straights that shouldn't be physically possible given the speed differential, and it's because the slipstream effect in daily races is doing more work than the settings screen admits to.

Is all a little wishy washy, we like to think this is "the real driving simulator" but truth be told there's a lot of unbalanced aspects in this game that is about creating "balance" I.e player retention algorithms. They don't advertise these things I believe they should but the whole gaming industry is one of the least regulated industries. And it's bigger than the movie industry Worrying when it's core demographic is 7-19yr olds.
